Hey Batter Batter

Ben's ball season is now over.  It started in late May and ran for 10 weeks:  4 weeks of practice and 6 weeks of games.  This was a step up from regular old t-ball; in this level, parent volunteers are the coaches.  A coach pitches to the kids and if they can't hit after 5 or so pitches, the tee comes out.  On Ben's team, the Mighty Lions, his very own Dad was the pitcher!

There was one rained out game in June so this past Thursday night was the make-up.  The heat index at the 5:30 game was close to 100*.  I called friends to keep Joey and Hannah so they didn't have to swelter in the heat for the hour-long game.  Sitting in the shade for me wasn't too bad, but it was HOT HOT HOT in the sun for the players and coaches.  I know because I tried sitting in the sun and lasted 3 minutes!!  We all had bottles of ice water to drink (and for Ben to wear when he'd run over to  me in between innings for a sprinkle on his head and back).

He had a team of sweet kids and nice parents.  From what his coach said, it seemed to be the team of all of the younger kids or ones who hadn't been in coach pitch before.  They tried hard but I'm pretty sure they lost every game if anyone was really keeping score.  Many of the other teams have been together for longer and met for extra practices.  I'm really thankful our head coach Jill shared our philosophy on little kid sports:  it's about learning together, having fun, and saving the multiple day committments and more serious competition for when they're a bit older.

Enjoy pics from the last game!  You'll notice Ben's bright red cheeks and the big water marks down his back from Mom dumping water on his head.  Oh, and one very sweaty pitcher.  :-)
