Ben's Graph

Thanks to 100+ Facebook friends answering "Which is your favorite fruit:  banana, apple, orange, or pineapple," Ben put together a graph for a math assignment today.  That was some serious raw data to mull through for a first grader!  For the assignment he actually had to come up with his own survey question with choices, collect responses, and compile it all.

The instructions were to actually gather only 20 responses, so with our 121 there was no way the tallies would fit in those skinny lil boxes.  We did it on the back instead.  I read him each answer while he tallied, and then he went through and read each one himself!  He really liked when my cousin jokingly said her favorite was watermelon (not on the list).

Bananas won!  Pinapple was a close second, followed by apples and then oranges.

To get a little extra math concept application in, I had him round each total to the nearest 5.  This also helped immensely when it was time to plug the info in the graph, as we had to do it by 5s to get it to fit on the page.  He already has learned to read graphs in increments of 2, so this was just another chance to use another math skill in a new way.  Coloring is not his forte.  :-)

Thanks for helping us out today!
